Arkoma Schools take New Approach in New Circumstances
COVID-19 has put schools into unprecedented territory. Between new approaches to instructional delivery and budget cuts, Arkoma Schools has chosen to take a less traditional approach to school administration. Over the last two years, Arkoma has operated with an Elementary Principal, a Dean of Students and a Superintendent/High School Principal. To continue seeing financial advantages, Arkoma will cut at the administrative level and instead put that money into teaching personnel, classroom budgets and student needs.
Shelly Harmon, who has been the Elementary Principal for 19 years, will now serve as the District Principal. Rick Harvey will continue as the Dean of Students and work closely with Mrs. Harmon on district needs. We hope that with the concept of a District Principal, we will see uniformity in leadership, as well as growth in student success and involvement.
By cutting financially at the top, we hope to continue offering classes and organizations not necessarily offered at neighboring districts such as: photography, archery, trap, 3rd-12th grade sports, FACS, AP Classes, and concurrent enrollment, to name a few. We were also proud of our new organization started this year to involve students who were not previously involved in other organizations. The Student Activities Board hosted different events throughout the year to involve the entire student body. We look forward to this organization growing next year. We are always looking to offer more unique opportunities for our students to help them gain skills to advance them in the careers of their choice.
As many other districts around us, our enrollment jumps up and down each year. With no particular indication of loss or growth, we hope to continue putting in place a system to retain the offerings we have for our students. This will be done by looking at ways to cut costs away from student directly. Over the last two years, we have received grants totaling over $400,000. This has allowed us to improve institutional delivery, curriculum, attendance, literacy, teacher training and much more. We have also received grants to completely redo both libraries with new books and furniture. We have new Promethean boards in every classroom, as well as a 1:1 device for every student in the district. In the last two years, we have purchased all new math, reading and social studies textbooks for the entire district as well. Great things are happening at Arkoma Schools and we would love for you and your child to join us in their educational journey!
